Collaboration Spring 2008
Final Report
Connecting Kids Globally Across the Curriculum
What
Our project will be based on children connecting and sharing globally across the curriculum using PowerPoint, Mixbook, Voicestreaming and the World Wide Web.
This is an opportunity for students to implement technology and ideas in all learning environments just outside of the classroom, and also an opportunity to connect special area teachers with the classroom.
Why
The purpose of this assignment is to give students help to prepare for a changing environment and to have them collaborate with others. This will help build a well rounded student who will be able to think critically and form a global perspective due to a changing environment. This collaboration can benefit students by allowing them to become better communicators, to build leadership relationships, to teach them to work well with others, and to become more aware of their cultural surroundings.
Some key elements of the EEV that will be addressed in this project include:
- The children are desired, vital, and contributing partners with others in a learning community.
- It extends into and beyond school or work days to a more holistic view of life and living.
- It blurs work and play, or obligation/ responsibility and desire/choice.
- It builds caring, meaning and self-worth.
- It has components that would change or be dramatically enhanced with powerful tools of electronic communication and multimedia expressioning being used well. It build activities that exist as vital in themselves, separate and off the computer. The village works to balance what is most successfully done on and off the computer.
- Art, dance, music, writing, speech, and other types of expression become the aesthetic domains of all people.
- It crosses academic disciplines often blurring the very sense of a particular discipline andbuilding a wholistic, natural learning experience.
- It is energizing and intrinsically motivating for children and adults.
- NYS curriculum and standards fit naturally within village actions.
Diversity
More capable students can create longer and more detailed responses, and less capable students can create shorter and less detailed responses.
How
Students will act as ambassadors for their countries (Egypt, China, Mexico or Germany) and convince their teacher and classmates that their land is the best and most exciting place to visit by locating information from different websites through a webquest. Students will work in groups of five or six to answer questions about their country. Each person in the group will be in charge of finding out about different things from that country. Then, each group will put everything together in an online scrapbook, using Mixbook.com. All groups will present their Mixbooks to the class where they will decide which country is the best to visit.
