Design Portfolio
The purpose of this Design Portfolio is to "design" a web site consisting of multiple pages that becomes a statement or statements on Design from a personal perspective especially as to how Design impacts or should impact education. First, we will concentrate on learning about Design, then we will concentrate on applying Design in education. This Design Module is meant to build an awareness of what design is and how it can affect education.
Design Thoughts
A Whole New Mind by Daniel Pink |
In Daniel Pink’s book, A Whole New Mind, he talks about how we are moving from a sequential, logical and analytical thinking world to one that is built on inventiveness, empathy, joyfulness and meaning. To compete in this era of abundance, it is no longer enough to create something that works, it also needs to be beautiful, whimsical or emotionally engaging. Well designed products have become more affordale and this gives the consumer a variety of choices. This has become a means of differentiation. In order to survive in this market it is important to constantly develop new things that the consumer thinks they need or are missing. We need to shift from an industrial world dominated by left-brain logical thinking to a right-brained intuitive world. |
My Notes on Design
As I began my learning on design I jotted down notes in my "Design Notebook". This is basically a mini note book. As I started gathering images I decided that it would be easier to have them organized together in a folder so they will be easily posted to a site. I created that folder in my website files. I then added a page to my Weblog where I could begin posting my notes to be used for my Design project. You can view my Weblog page here. One problem I had was that I needed to edit the post in order to add information. Another was that when I added pictures they automatically posted to the main page. Of course as my actual website started to take shape this notebook wasn't used anymore. However, throughout the whole process I continued to jot down notes in the paper notebook so I wouldn't loose any of my thoughts along the way.
