Schools that learn

Our required reading for team was Schools That Learn by Peter Senge.  The primary focus of this reading was the five disciplines personal mastery, mental models, shared visions, team learning and systems thinking.  The readings that were assigned sparked great conversations during our class discussions.  One of the readings that I found very interesting was section VII & IV Change in the school system.  I agree that a successful school is one that is always finding ways to make the learning process better and more efficient. (G1-6) Teachers also have to look to change.  With the new technology and the way students learn today teacher have to keep up with their students.

NECC

During summer one of 2005 I attended NECC the National Educational Computing Conference.  This was a great educational experience for me.  At first I was overwhelmed by the size of the conference.  I did however find it to be very exciting once I found what technologies I was interested in. (G2-5) At the conference there was a physical education section that displayed new technologies in P.E.   Virtual Biking, and Discovery Health Connection were two of the new outstanding teaching technologies.  Both of these teaching tools are interactive, and I was able to try them and get a feel for how they work.  (G1-10) They also meet the needs of many different types of students. (G1-7) The use of handhelds for teachers was also a technology of interest.  Being a physical education teacher we are always away from our computers and offices the entire class period. Attendance and assessment are two areas that handhelds can help in the everyday process of teaching P.E. (G1-1)(G1-9)

East End Wellness

During my two years in Team I had the wonderful opportunity of work with two other physical education teachers on a collaboration project.   We created a website that was based on wellness on the eastern end of long island. (G2-1)  We were able to create different topic areas using different technologies.  We created a flash quiz that Lisa and Anne both were able to use in their own health classes. (G2-4)  We also created an exercise and muscle page.  We took a digital photo of myself in an anatomical position and then used video clips of Lisa and myself performing different types of exercise for each muscle group. (G2-1) (G2-2) What is great about this site is it is a great resource for learners to find information pertaining to physical fitness.  It is also a great teaching tool for Lisa, Anne and myself for our physical education classes. (G1-11)

TECHNOLOGY

Digital Photography

Last summer I was very lucky to take a course in digital photography. I did not even own a digital camera or understood how to use one.   The focus of the class was nature but I learned so much about I photo and how to take pictures correctly.  I have since bought a camera and have started to collect and make different photo albums in I photo. (G1-5)  This will be a technology that I will use for a long time until something new and more advance is available.

Video Production

This last semester I have become very knowledgeable in using I Movie to produce video.  This may be the biggest and the most important technology that I have learned over the past two years.   As a football coach, video of the games and practices is a Vidal learning tool for the team.  (G2-3) (G2-4)  With the ability to cut and edit the video and to show the team curtain clips of the game is an amazing time saver.  In years past I would have to show the entire video on VHS and fast forward and rewind.  Now we record digitally and copy onto DVD.  With a push of the remote I can show clips over and over again in seconds. (G2-5)  I look forward to making the team high light film at the end of the season.  Adding text and music with different transitions will make the video the best it has ever been.
