About Me

My name is Evelyn O'Doherty and I have been an English Language Arts teacher for 6 years. I started my career at Riverhead High School where I taught 10th grade inclusion and 12th grade Advanced Placement Literature for three years. Feeling far from home, which is in Amagansett NY, I applied for and was accepted to a job in Southampton where I now teach 8th grade ELA.

I am interested in constructivism and multiple intelligence theory in the classroom and believe we must be creative in our teaching approach as to allow each child a chance to shine in his or her special way. I do multiple projects in the classroom and am very open and enthusiastic about allowing children to choose their own books to read and study topics of their choice. I believe this type of engagement allows students to delve more deeply into their subject matter, take ownership of their learning and retain their knowledge far better than a teacher-imposed learning model. I work hard to align our classroom work with the state standards, and strive to engage students in parallel tasks that prepare them for their state tests.

My extra-curricular activities include being co-coordinator of our school literary magazine, Seaglass and being involved in our Global Neighborhood project which seeks to connect middle students from all over the world using computer technology in order to break down stereotypes and learn to celebrate the diversity of other cultures.
