Professional Growth and Scholarship:

During my time in TEAM I have grown greatly as a teacher. Because I was a young teacher (beginning my second year) when I began TEAM, much of the information that I have learned in TEAM has been new to me. The readings and the work I have done have been of great service to me as a young teacher. I have read a lot of Peter Senge during my time in TEAM. His book Schools That Learn has made me think of situations in teaching that I face daily and will face in the future. As a child of two teachers I can see a lot of what Senge is talking about when he refers to the past; some of which time I was in school and other times my parents stories deal with some of what he is writing about (HM16).

The reason I became a teacher is rather simple for three reasons: I love to work with people, I love history and it is all I have ever seen. I've found the jobs I really enjoy are ones where I work with people. I guess I just like the reward of helping people and seeing their reaction to understanding something that I enjoy. I also have always enjoyed history. When you really like something, you want people to know about it, and the fact I like history lends perfectly to teaching. I want my students to enjoy it as much as I do. This is also happening with web design. It's my new love. Lastly, teaching is all I've ever known. Having two parents as teachers, it's all I saw. I respected them and the work they did. So when it came time to choose a profession, teaching was a first choice. As much as I hate it, I'm kind of turning into my parents. That might not be such a bad thing after all.

I can definitely apply what I have learned in these two years in class. I've become a tech geek (HM12). I can see myself using blogs and wikis in my classroom in the next few years as I get a full time tenured teaching job. Bill Gates said in his book, The Road Ahead: "Personal computers will not replace or devalue any of the human talent we need for educational challenges ahead: We need committed teachers, creative administrators, involved parents and of course, diligent students." (Gates, 215) I know this to be true, but I hope to use technology to aid me in my teaching. I will strive to help better prepare my students for college by having them work with computers in my classroom. I can have them do research in the library or use a program like School Island to help them prep for tests in the Electronic Learning Center. I see myself seeking information on the new hot technology trends for tomorrow's classrooms. I am actually teaching a web design class using Macromedia, a class which I love teaching and I'm constantly learning (G2-4). I see myself learning more technology and progressing as a teacher for years to come (G1-11).
