NECC
Last summer I attended NECC. This was the National Educational Computing Conference in Philidelphia. This was a great experience for me and a way for me to see a number of different ways that technology is incorporated into education. (G1-1). For example, I went to a session on Powerpoint. This was a great example of how technology is being used in the classroom. I did not think that this would be that useful for me, because I am a physical education teacher, and my classroom is the gymnasium or the athletics fields. But this year, I had an additional class teaching health in the health classroom, so I was able to use this information to make various greatly put together powerpoints for each unit. I was able to meet the needs of every student in my class by creating powerpoints with writing, photos, and audio. (G1-7). Here is a reflection piece I wrote after attending the powerpoint session:
The first concurrent session that I went to was entitled, “PowerPoint less to PowerPoint full. The presenter, Barry Haines did a great job of presenting his material. He gave us three different PowerPoint’s to look at. We were supposed to think objective, therefore there were no judgments being made. The first PowerPoint was made by an eighth grader. She read the whole PowerPoint, had the same colors, fonts, etc. throughout her presentation. The second was a teachers PowerPoint talking about different patterns in different pictures. There was music and color to the PowerPoint. The third was a fifth grades student’s work on Japanese cuisine. It was extremely short, and the student said stuff that did not have to do with the PowerPoint.I thought this was a great way to start his presentation. We then talked about special continuity near rather than far, about temporal, words and pictures together on a page, and about coherence, how some words could be minimized. The speaker gave us a great idea about how some PowerPoint really looks. He gave us examples of great PowerPoint’s, and examples of not so great PowerPoint’s. (G2-5). The only thing I would have also liked was to learn how to do specific things in PowerPoint.I could use his ideas and helpful hints in my class this coming year. I am a physical education teacher, but a fifth grade health teacher as well. I will be able to use his ideas when I have my students in health making their own PowerPoint’s. (G1-10)
Another session that I went to that was directly connection to my field was on handhelds in the physical education classes. I learned about the new handhelds that are used in a unit such a orienteering which is a new unit in our high school physical educaiton classes this year. I was able to talk with the representivies and get all of my questions answered. I thought this was a great opportunity for me and my district because I went back to my athletic director and department coordinator to discuss the new technology that could be very helpful for us in our new classes. This became a great addition to our physical education curriculum. (G1-9).
Schools that Learn
Throughout the two years in TEAM, we were assigned to read certain readings from Schools that Learn. This book was a great addition to my professionalism. After each reading, I took time to reflect on what I learned. It was easy reading and very interesting. After TEAM is over, I will continue reading the book and I will look into other similar readings for more additional knowledge. One reading that was very informative to me was about leadership. I needed to look at where I am a leader. I found three places, a coach, teacher, and a sibling. I looked into the different reasons why I am a leader in these three places. This was very easy to understand. (G1-6).
Journal Entries
One of our requirements during team was writing journal entries each week. We were required to write one journal entry for technology, one for our eev collaboration and one for our PG/ S each week. We were also asked to write three leadership logs throughout each semester, and a workshop log each time we attended a workshop. For some people, they thought this was just busy work and they would rather not write journal entries, but for me, I saw it as a way to see my progression in TEAM. I enjoyed writing the journal entries and I think it was a great idea to have us write journal entries in a number of different categories. Here are a few examples of some of my journal entries throughout TEAM.
Technolgy log: I think this is the first technology log that I have done on video. I think that I have gone a long way with video production. Last semester I went to a workshop which I thought was great on video. From then on, I have been working on many videos. The recent videos I have been working on are for my wellness site. Each week I have been making a video for a different muscle.
During our last workshop, my group and I went to the weight room and I video taped steve and lisa doing different exercises for a number of different muscles. Since then, I have been working each week on producing a video for a specific muscle. For example, this week I worked on a bicep video. I took all of the exercises for the biceps and put them together in a video. Last week I did the tricep muscle. I will continue creating videos each week until I get through them all. Next week I hope to do a technology log on flash.
Leadership log: For this leadership log I will have to talk about my fifth grade health class. After almost finishing my collaboration site, I thought that it was a good idea to bring my students to the computer room and have them explore the wellness site that I created. After creating the flash quiz, I thought that it was a good time for looking at assessment. I had the students explore the site, and then take the quiz. The quiz had various questions about all different parts of the site. Before the students took the quiz, I went over the site with them, showing them key points of the site. To me, that was leaderhip. (G2-3).
EEV
The electronic educational village is another way of saying collaboration. My wellness collaboration has been a major part of my success throught TEAM. The first semester of TEAM, we were told that we would have to work collaborativly in a group on a common website. Three of us got together as physical education and health teachers to build a successful wellness website. We set goals each week and talked online, emailed and met to produce our site. (G2-1). Here is an example of how I used my collaboration site in my classroom:
After almost finishing my collaboration site, I thought that it was a good idea to bring my students to the computer room and have them explore the wellness site that I created. After creating the flash quiz, I thought that it was a good time for looking at assessment. I had the students explore the site, and then take the quiz. The quiz had various questions about all different parts of the site. Before the students took the quiz, I went over the site with them, showing them key points of the site. (G2-2).
Last semester we were asked to have a developmental portfolio. A major part of my portfolio was my wellness collaboration site. (G2-2).

TECHNOLOGY
Throughout this course, I have learned a variety of different technologies. The first semester I started by learning more about microsoft word and powerpoint. I was able to understand these two pieces of technology in depth. Next, I started to learn how to use dreamweaver. I was able to create a page and know how to oraganize my files in that specific page. Once dreamweaver was understandable, I started to learn fireworks. I was able to create an image in fireworks and import it to dreamweaver. Then in the summer I took a course entitled Nature Photography. I saw this course as very useful to me in the education field and just for my own knowedlge. (G1-5). This course taught me how to take pictures with my digital camera and how to edit them. It also taught me the imporatnce of shadows, layers, and how to make a picture perfect. (G1-11)Then this year, I dedicated my whole fall semester and part of spring to video. I attended a workshop on video production and found out step by step how to develop a video. One the index page I have a great example of a video I created for my wellness site on different exercises for different muscle groups. (G2-1, G2-4). Lastly, I learned flash. My collaboration and I worked in flash to create a quiz for our wellness site. This was a great assessment tool for us to see how easy or hard it is to navigate through our site.
